Happy National Doughnut Day!

I try and eat healthy...honestly, I do.  You couldn't get me to eat a vegetable as a kid.  I figured ways to hide broccoli in my milk and lobbied that since it included potato that McDonald's french fries should be a part of a major food group.

I however have grown-up and embraced all vegetables and try to incorporate them in my diet as much as possible (I would still like to not that if I could live on one food for the rest of my life, my choice would still McDonald's french fries.).

But I'm not going to lie..I like junk food.  I just **try** to have it in moderation as much as possible...or that willpower will allow me.

On that note, on my way to work this a.m. I dropped by Dunkin' Donuts for a cup of coffee since I desperately needed a caffeine jolt after doing Turbo Jam Cardio Party the evening before (or maybe it was the fact I was out at a bar until 1 a.m....but whatever).  I ordered my large french vanilla coffee and then the lady at the register asked me "would you like a free doughnut."  I said no, kinda perplexing as to why I was being offered a free doughnut.  And I really didn't have time to contemplate my answer as I was already running behind in getting to work.

As I left DD, I felt kinda proud of myself for refusing the doughnut...giving myself a little mental high-five for not giving my body those calories I really didn't need.

When I got to work and logged on to Facebook, I then saw why I was being offered a free doughnut.  Let me just wish you a "Happy National Donut Day".

Later on I noticed the article from Self Magazine on which doughnuts are the "best" for you...  Like I mentioned, moderation is the key...so let them eat donuts and check out which ones might actually be the better ones for you.  You'd be shocked at some of the factoids...like two cocoa doughnuts would be actually better calorie wise than one reduced-fat blueberry muffin.  Yikes! Who knew!

I'm Okay With Being Slow

Got an email from the GWB Challenge folks on the important information on Sunday's race.  One of the things I noticed was that the 10K, which I'm registered for, starts at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8:15 a.m.  First thought was, wow, pretty sure there are going to be some 5K folks finishing before I finish the 10K.

But you know what, I'm okay with that.  Go ahead, run past me.  I'm going to be enjoying the views of the NYC Skyline as I run over the bridge (and hoping a fear of heights doesn't suddenly set in).

Again...the whole point is I'm doing it.  That's what matters!

See...doesn't this look cool (and please note, I'm not in this picture.  I hijacked it off the GWB Challenge Facebook page).

Happy National Running Day - 2013 Edition

So I created this blog so many moons ago with great expectations and goals...and figured that National Running Day 2013 might be a fitting day to start blogging.

While many of my grand running ideas didn't come to fruition between then and now, those same lofty goals remain.  My ultimate goal would be to complete the 50 State Half Marathon Challenge.  That's right folks - 50 states, 50 half marathons.

When I originally came up with the idea for this blog, I was totally gung-ho and ready to race the Swamp Stomp Half, the Goofy Challenge in Disney and so many other races.  Then this thing called life got into the way.  But what I learned through it all is that life happens and sometimes your route just might have to take a detour.

Anyhoo, my main reason in starting this blog, other than to chronicle the journey on my goal to running 13.1 miles in all 50 states, was hopefully to inspire people to run and show that ANYONE can do it.  You can always here me saying "If I can do, you can do it."  And one of the reasons I always say it is because...I'M SLOW.  Running for me got fun once I realized no matter how hard I tried, I was never going to be one of the top finishers.  I was never going to win a race.  I will most likely never qualify for Boston.  What winning for me now means is crossing the finish line - all glorious 13.1 miles - and still being able to stand. I love the thrill that crossing that line gives me...that satisfaction of hard work paying off and accomplishing a challenge.  And the challenge is my own and no one else's.  So when those Kenyans are finishing their race in an hour, while I'm still maybe at mile four...I'm totally content on finishing in whatever time is on the clock.

With all that being said, my first race in a LONG TIME is coming up.  While it's not a half marathon, it's still running.  It's the George Washington Bridge 10K Challenge.  ...and to boot, I really haven't run much lately so this will be interesting!  I "ran" a pathetic four miles the other day in some hot weather.  But again, what matters is that I DID IT!  And how cool will it be to say I've run over the GWB...I'm sure lots of people would (except those trying to use the bridge to cross over into New York...sorry folks).

Also, with it being National Running Day, I registered for another half marathon.  Going to run in the Rock'n'Roll Providence Half Marathon on 9/29/13.

Now...go get your run on.
